Did the universe have a plan?

13.8 billion years ago something happened that shouldn't have happened.

Not an explosion. An arrangement. Every constant, every force, every number sitting exactly where it needed to sit. Move any one of them by a fraction and you get nothing. No stars. No carbon. No water. No eyes to read this.

The probability of our universe emerging the way it did is 1 in 10 to the power of 10 to the power of 123. That number is so large it doesn't fit inside the universe it's describing.

That's not luck. Luck doesn't do that.

Now zoom in. Past a hundred billion galaxies. Past our tiny corner of the Milky Way. Down to this rock sitting at exactly the right distance from exactly the right star. Warm enough for water. Stable enough for time. As if something was expecting someone to show up.

Then you showed up.

Made of the same atoms as the rock. The same carbon as the stars. Inanimate matter that somehow woke up and started asking questions about itself. The universe looking at itself through your eyes.

And here's what gets me.

The sun has been burning for five billion years. It will burn for five billion more. Against that you are nothing. A breath. A blink. The sun doesn't know your name and never will.

But the sun can't wonder about any of this.

You can.

That's not nothing. That's everything.

Because wonder is not a survival mechanism. You don't need to contemplate the edge of space to find food or avoid predators. You don't need a sense of justice to pass on your genes. Evolution doesn't produce people who sacrifice their lives for strangers or die for principles.

But here you are. Doing exactly that. Feeling things that have no biological explanation.

Something gave you that.

And something that precise, that intentional, that focused on producing exactly you, would not go silent after all that effort.

It would send a message.

One that doesn't change. One that describes the horizons and what's inside you with equal precision. One that was there before we had instruments to verify what it was saying.

The vastness of the universe shows you the power.

The fine tuning shows you the intention.

The fact that you can read both shows you were expected.

"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (Quran 41:53)

 

The question is what you do with that.
